Gas cylinders exploded in lorry fire on M40

At 5.36am on the morning of Saturday 7th February 2015 firefighters were called to the Southbound carriageway of the M40 between Junction 4 (Handy Cross) and Junction 3 (Loudwater) after a lorry containing beds and furniture caught fire.

Two fire appliances with crews were despatched to the incident from High Wycombe fire station, one from Marlow fire station and one from Princes Risborough fire station as well as an officer.

In tackling the fire the firefighters used three compressed air foam jets, two hose reels, three sets of breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera.

The lorry was destroyed in the fire. A number of gas cylinders on board the lorry exploded however no injuries reported.

The clearing up operation from the aftermath of the incident was expected to take a considerable time.
