Nations best Badminton players in action at Wycombe Leisure Centre

The Nations best Badminton players were in action at Wycombe Leisure Centre on Friday 1st September 2017.

Hundreds of spectators packed the grandstands to watch the first days play in the 2017 English National Badminton Championships which this year are being held at the Wycombe Leisure Centre at Handy Cross.

The Championships, which run until Sunday 3rd September 2017, will see the best Badminton players in the nation, including Olympic heroes from Team GB, compete to be crowned the 2017 English National Badminton Champion in their respective discipline.

On Friday 1st September the round of 32 and round of 16 was held for all disciplines. On Saturday the quarter finals and semi-finals will be held with the finals being held on Sunday when the English National Champion in each of the disciplines will be decided.

Badminton claims to be the second most popular participation sport in the world. It’s also officially the fastest racquet sport in the world with the shuttle being smashed around the court at speeds of up to 200mph. Badminton became an Olympic sport in 1992 when the Olympic Games were held in Barcelona, the first televised Olympic badminton tournament was watched by 1.1 billion people.

The award winning Wycombe Leisure Centre, which opened in 2016, is proving to be the perfect venue for the 2017 English National Badminton Championships not only because of the world class facilities that High Wycombe’s new leisure centre has to offer but also because of the large player base in Buckinghamshire and close by in the South of England.
