Watching them watching me….

Oh my, Friday soon comes around indeed there’s been so much going on this week that I almost lost track of time.

It was so nice on Friday lunchtime sitting on a bench in the grounds of the Parish Church eating my lunch. Indeed what can be nicer than sitting there eating a sandwich watching the world go by?

Of course this is the 21st Century and while yours truly watches the world go the many CCTV cameras in the town are gazing back watching me.

While sitting there in the locality of the Parish Church nobody did anything untoward, nobody committed a crime and everything was peaceful. So why do we have the CCTV cameras?

If the cameras were to be removed would everyone suddenly go on the rampage resulting in Wycombe town centre being engulfed in a crime wave? Of course not!

Even as I write Automatic Number Plate Recognition equipment is being installed in all of Wycombe’s car parks so potentially our cars can even be tracked when and where we park them.

While not all systems are storing information about our movements the potential to monitor us, should it be required, is potentially vast.

Never has there been so much monitoring of everyday activities.

Only yesterday the Government started rushing emergency phone and internet data laws through parliament. Aimed at protecting the public from criminals and terrorists the laws will mean that records of our phone calls and web sites that we visit will be stored for a year so the powers that be can check up on us if we do anything wrong.

Sadly everyone is being monitored to prevent the actions of a handful of people who mean our society harm.

Big Brother really is watching us and what’s more he is storing everything he sees to use against us should the need arise.

Do they really think the new emergency laws will be of any use? The rascals who do naughty things will simply avoid using the internet and communicate with their deviant friends face to face of by letter.

In truth I fear the surveillance society has got out of control. Watching and monitoring us gives the powers that be a sense of control over us indeed we are under observation like specimens under a microscope.

Can we go anywhere to be free of the ever watching eye of the powers that be?

If this is modern life then put me in a time machine and send me back to the halcyon days of the 1970’s before all the spy technology invaded our society.

What do you think?
