Cold weather freezes waste in green bins

| November 7, 2014

Wycombe District Council have issued advice to home owners after the sudden drop in temperature resulted in garden waste freezing inside some green wheeled bins.

When waste becomes frozen inside a bin it prevents the waste collection operatives from emptying bins. Home owners can help by loosening the materials inside the bin before presenting it for collection.

Bins should not be overfilled or over packed at this compacts the garden waste particularly the materials at the bottom of the bin. The more compact it is, the more likely it is to freeze.

The lids of bins should be kept closed to reduce moisture build up. If you are able to keep the garden bin in a garage or shed, this can also help prevent the waste freezing.
