The new leisure centre at Handy Cross is proving to be very popular and it’s only been open a week.

The new swimming facilities, including the 50 metre pool, community pool and splash pad have seen a massive increase in use. Family swimming bookings are up by 700% over the equivalent time last year. Junior swimming numbers are up by 82% and adult swimming have increased by 60%.

The sports hall has seen bookings for squash go up by 36% and people joining aerobics classes up by 23% over last year’s figures.

When Cabinet Member for Community, Cllr Mrs Julia Adey was told about the increase in footfall at the new centre, she said: ‘I’m thrilled to find out that so many people have been up to see what’s on offer at the new leisure. something for everyone – whether you’re young or old, a beginner or very advanced in a sport, this centre has something for you.

Cllr Adey joined Karen Satterford, Chief Executive Officer of Wycombe District Council to try out equipment in the 150 station gym last week (pictured above).

Wycombe Wanderers football club used the gym and the pool for training ahead of their match last week and on Tuesday Wycombe District Swimming Club had its first ‘club night’ at the pool.

Head Coach for the Wycombe District Swimming Club, Kevin Brooks said: ‘The new pool has state of the art timing and starting blocks, making it fit for regional & national swimming competitions at the highest level. I’m confident that as well as record levels of local people coming to swim here, we’ll be seeing some new swimming records being set in this pool when we host our prestigious events over the year – welcoming athletes from all over the UK. This facility firmly puts the Wycombe District back on the Competitive Swimming Map.

Stuart Lee, who manages the leisure centre for the operator Places for People Leisure said: ‘We’ve got off to a flying start this week. We’ve seen record numbers of people taking advantage of our special offers to sign up for membership – we’ve had over 15,500 visits to the facility since we opened the doors to the public.  It’s certainly kept our staff and our booking systems busy!

We thank everyone for their patience as we work to resolve queries and ensure users can participate in their respective activity.
