Opinion : Is anybody interested in the 2018 World Cup?
The 2018 World Cup is under way.
The first games of the tournament have been played in Russia and this evening, Monday 18th June 2018, England will be playing their first match.
However here in High Wycombe daily life is going on as normal. Anyone travelling around the town centre or the residential areas would be hard pressed to know there was anything special happening in the world.
How many houses in Wycombe are flying the flag of St. George in support of the England football team? From what I can see none of them are.
So far I haven’t seen a single car driving around with any flags being displayed from the windows.
Even the shops in the town centre don’t seem to have done anything special apart from some carefully placed advertising close to the point of sale of alcohol.
Yours truly would have thought that perhaps a big screen would have been put up in Frogmoor so people can gather to watch the England games? Alas, it seems this is too much for our town to organise.
Large sporting events should be exactly the sort of thing to bring the local community together and promote the sense of belonging and community spirit which was once so prevalent in our country.
Nowadays it’s as if the people of Wycombe couldn’t care less about our national football team or the World Cup which is a real shame. Your humble servant is left wondering is anybody in High Wycombe interested in the 2018 World Cup let alone the success of the Three Lions?
As for my good self, well, on Monday evening yours truly will be watching the big match at my neighbours house while dressed in my replica England football shirt and shorts ready to give our national football team my full backing.
If England are in the World Cup finals on Sunday 15th July 2018 then my neighbour has offered to host a large party for all of our friends to come and watch the match with my good self covering the entire cost.
So far I’ve seen every match of the tournament. After seeing Iceland hold Argentina to a draw and Germany lose to Mexico then surely its a 100% certainty that England is definitely going to win the World Cup this year?
Indeed when Brazil failed to beat Switzerland yours truly immediately wrote invitations to all my friends to come around to my neighbours house on the 15th July 2018 to see England lift the World Cup. The invitations are now in the post box outside the post office in Castle Street ready for the postman to deliver.
