‘Shine a Light’ for our brilliant nurses on International Nurses Day 2020 at 8.00pm on Tuesday 12th May 2020
Tuesday 12th May 2020 is International Nurses Day 2020 and provides an opportunity to celebrate the brilliant nurses at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and throughout the UK.
The residents of Buckinghamshire are being encouraged to ‘Shine a Light’ for the nurses at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust at 8.00pm on the evening of Tuesday 12th May 2020 to show your support and to participate in the International Nurses Day 2020 celebration.
Tuesday 12th May 2020, also marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing who pioneered infection control.
It is fitting people will be using the symbol of her lamp to shine the light on the country’s nursing talent as light is a visible symbol of welcome, warmth and hope.
Nursing has changed dramatically since Florence Nightingale founded the first nursing school in London. Today nurses are not only on hospital wards, they are out in the community, care homes, academia, running hospitals and developing policy.
The challenge of modern nursing is to deliver consistent and improving high quality care and they are essential to meet the challenge of improving care, reducing inequalities and using health and care resources wisely.
Leanne, a heart failure nurse currently working in one of the intensive care units at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, has shared her thoughts on what it means to be a nurse and what it’s like to work at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (BHT). Leanne said: ‘There are many reasons why I’m proud to be a nurse, far too many to mention, but the most important one to me is the difference I make to people’s lives, both patients and their loved ones.
From empowering them with knowledge, to supporting them in their darkest hour – no day or shift is ever the same and I love that. I’ve worked for BHT for the past 14 years and I’ve never been more proud than I am today.
Watching colleagues from a variety of different specialities and areas step up and unite over the past few weeks has been immense and I’m so grateful to be part of that.‘
