A local employment lawyer has commented on the budget announced on Wednesday 3rd March 2021.

Debbie Sadler, senior associate in the employment team at Blaser Mills Law, said: ‘The Chancellor’s decision to extend the Furlough scheme until the end of September is positive news for businesses, providing more support for jobs and the economy and allowing extra time for recovery. The additional time will allow businesses to fully focus on providing their services and generating income as lockdown restrictions are lifted, rather than having to immediately consider staffing needs.

There will inevitably be an adjustment as restrictions are relaxed with some individuals being reluctant to return to ‘business as usual’. The extension of the furlough scheme will allow companies to gauge demand as the economy reopens and to assess staffing requirements accordingly.

The extension of the scheme also allows businesses and employers more time to assess business recovery before deciding on any workforce reduction, and will hopefully prevent large numbers of people losing their jobs at the end of June [2021].
