For ‘Employability Day 2023’, Friday 30th June 2023, Fedcap’s 25 offices across the UK have hosted meet-and-greet sessions between employers and customers, who are being supported to find sustainable jobs.

In High Wycombe, MP Steve Baker met with a customer who is bringing a taste of the Caribbean to the town, after he received tailored support from Fedcap to help him set up his own business.

Andrew St Ange, 61, who moved from his native Trinidad to the UK with his parents when he was just three years old, has always wanted to put his home country on the menu.

The former car factory worker was served up help and support through Fedcap, which is delivering the Department for Work and Pensions’ Restart Scheme in the town.

The scheme helps people who have been out of work to pick up the skills they need for the modern workforce and helping them with tailored support to find suitable, sustainable jobs. It also supports people to follow their dreams of starting their own business.

In Andrew’s case, in November 2022 he opened the James William Diner, named after his late father, at 20 Crendon Street, High Wycombe. The mouth-watering dishes include the traditional jerk chicken, curried goat and rice and peas.

Andrew said: ‘I have always wanted to introduce my Afro-Caribbean heritage to the masses and I am glad to say that so far it seems to be going really well. My dream now is to replicate the success of the diner in other places. Hopefully this is not a one-off.

Steve Baker MP, who visited the diner to meet with Andrew and hear his story, said: ‘I was pleased to be at the opening of Fedcap Employment’s office in High Wycombe for the launch of the Government’s Restart Scheme. It’s good to see this has helped Andrew launch his own business.

Brian Bell, CEO of Fedcap, said: ‘It’s great to see Andrew follow his dream. It’s now two years since the Restart Scheme opened and we’re delighted that thousands of people like Andrew have received tailored support to help them on their journey to work.

Steve Baker MP officially opened our first office in High Wycombe and it’s fantastic to see him come back to see one of our customers doing so well in the town.

Our whole organisation is getting involved in Employability Day today to support our sector’s drive – #WorkingForBetterWork. We’ve had dozens of our employers including local, national and international companies, coming into our offices and meeting our customers to talk about the opportunities they have available. We hope today’s events will result in even more people moving into sustainable employment.

Elizabeth Taylor, Chief Executive of the Employment Related Services Association (ERSA), said: ‘Employability Day is the opportunity for the employment sector to showcase what it does so well – getting people into good jobs and careers, meeting employers’ needs and reaching into communities encouraging and supporting people into the labour market.
