Wycombe Homeless Connection’s Winter Night Shelter will open again from 2nd January 2015 through to the 31st March 2015.
Hosted by seven church venues in High Wycombe the shelter provides up to 900 bed-nights and preserves life by welcoming guests out of the cold as well as providing a period of stability to allow those in the shelter to work on longer term housing with staff.
There are still opportunities available for volunteers to work together to provide the warm welcome for which the shelter is known – former guests have dubbed it ‘The Hilton of Shelters‘!
Around 250 people have already offered shifts, however the shelter still needs a few more volunteers, especially to cover night shifts and weekends. It takes a good number to staff 267 evening, night and morning shifts in the season reliably and safely.
You can get an idea of the work from this powerful 3-minute video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN7j6nYNwv4
Volunteers work together under a shift leader to provide a safe and welcoming environment for guests. There are three shifts: evening (6.00pm to 10.00pm), night (9.45pm to 7.00am) and morning (6.45am to 9.00am). Volunteers are needed to :
- Be hosts and cook the evening meal in the evening shift
- Keep an eye on things in the overnight shift (sleeping half the time)
- Be hosts and cook breakfast in the morning shift
- Help offsite with laundry, baking cakes, prayer etc
