Portsmouth 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers
Wycombe travelled to Portsmouth on Saturday 23rd April 2016 for a game the Chairboys had to win to keep their hopes of finishing the season in the play off positions.
Wycombe started the match in a determined manner, in just the second minute Michael Harriman came close to scoring for Wycombe but his shot, from outside the box, was too high.
Both sides had chances in what was an evenly matched first half however Portsmouth took the lead in the thirty seventh minute when Gary Roberts placed a close range shot into the centre of the Wycombe goal.
From then on Wycombe’s dreams of a place in the play-offs started to slip away.
Despite being a goal down at half time the Wycombe players kept chasing chances but their hopes were dealt a body blow in the sixty seventh minute when Conor Chaplin gave Portsmouth a two goal lead placing a shot in the bottom right corner of the Wycombe net.
Sido Jombati scored Wycombe’s first goal of the game in the seventy third minute when his free kick found the top left corner of the Portsmouth net.
Portsmouth managed 53% possession and of their fourteen shots on the Wycombe goal seven were on target. Wycombe could only manage to get five of their twelve shots on goal on target. The match saw eighteen fouls, ten from Wycombe players and eight from Portsmouth.
Wycombe’s dream of taking part in this seasons League Two play-offs and possible promotion ended today. Currently in ninth place in League Two with sixty four points from forty four games the Blues will be playing in League Two again next season.
The attendance at Fratton Park was 16,187 (737 from Wycombe).
