RAF Freedom Parade to be held in Marlow on Sun 18th Sep 2016

In a dual event which also commemorates the 76th anniversary of the Battle of Britain members of the armed forces will exercise their right to parade through Marlow on Sunday 18th September 2016.

Personnel from RAF High Wycombe will parade along the High Street in Marlow and, in accordance with tradition, have their swords drawn, bayonets fixed and colours flying.

The parade will start from Court Garden car park at approximately 1.35pm and follow a route along the High Street to muster at the War Memorial in the Causeway for a short service to commemorate the Battle of Britain. Following the parade there will be a service will be held in All Saint’s Church.

Between 12.30pm and 2.30pm West Street from the Oxford Road junction, the High Street, Spittal Street and Marlow Bridge will all be closed.

The RAF base in Naphill was awarded the freedom of the district in 2011 by Wycombe District Council.

RAF station commander, Group Captain Phil Lester said: ‘The Freedom Parade celebrates the close relationship that exists between the community of the Wycombe district and RAF High Wycombe.

The Battle of Britain was a pivotal point in history and the Second World War in particular. We are proud to remember those brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and look forward to sharing this commemoration with the residents of the district.‘

Wycombe District Council Chairman Cllr Mahboob Hussain said: ‘The Wycombe district has always been proud of its association with the RAF and our residents are deeply grateful to our servicemen and women for their commitment, service and sacrifice for our country.‘

The Mayor of Marlow Cllr Bob Johnson said: ‘It is a huge honour that RAF High Wycombe has chosen Marlow to host their Freedom Parade.
