Have you heard about the new Greenway Trail that opened in Aylesbury recently linking the railway station to Waddesdon Manor?
According to an article that appeared in the news section of this site, the new trial was officially opened on Thursday 13th September 2018 and provides a traffic free link from Aylesbury Town centre to the popular National Trust attraction.
It’s nice to hear that the government gave £1m to get the project up and running. However a few minutes after reading the article, while sitting in the drawing room at my ancestral home, yours truly started to think about similar projects that could be done in High Wycombe.
Of course there is one project that our town desperately needs. I am of course referring to the re-opening of the railway link from High Wycombe to Marlow, which would also allow travel on to the stretch of line that still exists from Marlow to Maidenhead.
Just think what a benefit it would be to the town for people to be able to travel to and from Marlow into High Wycombe railway station.
Over the years there have been numerous plans put forward to re-open the line but alas, none have come to fruition.
There have even been plans put forward for a ‘light rail’ link to cut costs but if a project is worth doing then it needs doing properly and any trains should be full size and normal rather than sill little things.
It seems that Aylesbury is on the receiving end of Government investment so why can’t Wycombe get a slice of the action too?
Yes, there may have been buildings constructed on the site of the trackbed since the closure of the stretch of line from High Wycombe to Bourne End on Saturday 2nd May 1970. Surely this project is of such importance that a compulsory purchase order is severed on the owners of the buildings and they should be duly demolished to make way for the reinstatement of the railway.
While Aylesbury has a new Greenway Trail yours truly fears that Wycombe is unlikely to get its rail link back to Marlow and beyond.
Of course Aylesbury is now a ‘Garden Town’, however Wycombe just seems to be treated like the compost heap at the end of the garden.
Rather than wasting the money on such silly projects would be not be better to give us our railway link to Maidenhead back again?
What do you think?
