The final section of High Wycombe’s £9.2m Alternative Route through the town centre opened on Monday 11th November 2019.
Aimed at keeping traffic flowing smoothly by keeping speeds slow and steady, the final section of road connecting Suffield Road to Desborough Road is called Suffield Hill. It marks the culmination of a four year long construction project creating just over half a mile of road at a cost of £9.2m.
The short section of road at Suffield Hill has been built by Inland Homes as part of its Centre Square residential and commercial development on the former town centre gasworks site.
With the completion of the last section of road traffic can now flow between West Wycombe Road and Marlow Hill using the new town centre alternative route bypassing the Abbey Way flyover.
The penultimate stretch of the alternative route, from Marlow Hill junction along Queen Alexandra Road to the beginning of Suffield Road, was completed in October 2018.
Designed to a slow and steady brief, with narrowed traffic lanes, central reservation, new pavements and road surfacing the Alternative Route scheme is part of the High Wycombe Masterplan which is a joint project between Buckinghamshire County Council, Wycombe District Council and Buckinghamshire Local Enterprise Partnership.
