| July 14, 2020

Wycombe Wanderers have won promotion to the Championship after winning the League One play-off final at Wembley on Monday 13th July 2020.

The Chairboys defeated Oxford United by two goals to one to secure promotion. It was the first time in their history that Wycombe have gained promotion to the second tier of English football.

Wycombe took the lead in the ninth minute, a corner from Joe Jacobson allowed Anthony Stewart to head the ball in to the centre of the Oxford goal.

Both sides had further attempts on goal during the first half, however at half time Wycombe were still leading by a single goal.

In the fifty seventh minute Oxford drew level through a shot by Mark Sykes which found the centre of the Wycombe goal.

It was looking as if the score was going to be level at full time however in the seventy seventh minute Simon Eastwood (Oxford United) fouled Wycombe’s Fred Onyedinma in the penalty area. In the seventy ninth minute Joe Jacobson successfully converted the penalty with a left footed shot which found the centre of the Oxford goal.

Oxford tried to make a come back but even after six minutes of extra time there was nothing they could do to deny Wycombe promotion.
